A bit of dry terminology. You may have heard or read the term swimming or freestyle cycle before, and perhaps you can’t quite picture what it means. It’s swimming terminology used to ensure everyone is on the same page when writing books about technique, and you’ll hear it from me a few times too. The term “cycle” refers to both freestyle strokes, meaning the stroke with the left and right arm.
We’ll get to this concept of “cycle” in the next chapter when discussing kicking, because the number of kicks – whether we do 6 kicks or 2 kicks – is counted per one complete freestyle cycle, which means a stroke with the left and right arm.
